Promising Faithfulness

To Eva, my dear godchild, 

In a few months you will be standing at the altar making the biggest commitment of your life.    Does it seem strange that at 14 years old, you are a bride? That’s what Jesus calls his believers.  Actually, you will be making a commitment that is more meaningful and long lasting than marriage!  Are you ready to promise life-long faithfulness to your Savior, and affirm the miracle of your baptism into His family?   You have studied the Catechism, memorized Scripture verses and will probably do well (besides a little nervousness) for your examination. Your pastor will be asking a very tough question:

Will you, with God’s help, promise to suffer all, even death, rather than fall away from the Christian faith?

Do you realize how serious this commitment will be? How can you be sure you want to make this Confirmation vow?  

When you think of Christmas, do you remember the exciting announcement of Immanuel—God is with us?  Jesus left the awesomeness of heaven to walk on earth with confused, unappreciative, sinful people. Why?   Because your Savior made the very serious promise that he would suffer all, even death, so you, Eva, can be forgiven. Does He promise to walk with you through times when you are faithful and attentive to his Word, as well as during hours when you’ve ignored him?  You bet!  And His “texts” can be counted on more than any best friend.

As you prepare to confirm your baptism faith-gift, my prayer is that you always TRUST God’s loving promises because, “he who promised is faithful”. (Hebrews 10:23)

In love and appreciation for you,
  Aunt Sue
